MONDAY 8TH NOVEMBER 1999 - Head Office slims down...

Another Functional Heads meeting is called to give an update on redundancies, in particular how we handle voluntary versus compulsory. It is complicated; for many people voluntary is better, but some get a better package under compulsory, even if they are actually quite happy to go. The overall effect of the Head Office cuts will be a saving of around £120 million a year. That is an impressive number, and more than I expected- although you have to ask why it hasn't been done before if it is so easy. Alternatively, we'll discover that the thousand staff who are departing all did really important and useful things and the business will grind to a halt!
